Harriett Romo

Dr. Harriett Romo has a Master’s and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego, and postdoctoral studies in Sociology at Stanford University. She also has a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Master’s in Education from the University of California, Los Angeles.
At present, Dr. Harriett Romo is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at UTSA. She has also taught at the University of Texas at Austin and at Texas State University. She has directed grant projects at CAPRI from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Small Business Administration, the Rockefeller Foundation, and other local foundations. Her research interests include Latino children and schooling, early childhood education, immigrant families and children, and youth with experience with child protective services.

Sophia Ortiz

Sophia Ortiz directs the administrative operations of the UTSA Child and Adolescent Policy Research Institute (CAPRI). She is responsible for independent/discretionary management of all financial resources, contract and grant administration, academic and staff personnel, student programs, facilities, equipment management, and special programs. In addition she participates in planning, organizing, coordinating, staffing, and supervising various programs. She supervises the development and modification of contracts and grant proposals, oversees the monitoring of awards to ensure the appropriateness of expenditures and is responsible for managing resources to meet audit compliance criteria. She has been responsible for compliance with various regulations and reporting requirements including re-budgeting, and human subjects (IRB) on several grants with CAPRI. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in Sociology from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Emma Phearse

Emma Phearse is pursuing her master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at UTSA. She graduated from Trinity University in 2017 with a B.A. in religion and history. As a Graduate Research Assistant at the CAPRI/Mexico Center, she helps the Program Coordinator plan and collaborate with students and mentors in the UTSA Mellon Humanities Pathways Program. Her goals after graduation include pursuing a license in professional counseling and helping children and adolescents to thrive socially and emotionally in their everyday lives.

Alyssa Kulka

Alyssa Kulka is one of the graduate research assistants for the UTSA Mellon Humanities Pathways Program. She is a UTSA graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. She received her B.A. in psychology with a minor in sociology at the University of Texas at Austin. During her time at the University of Texas, she worked as a research assistant for three semesters examining the interplay between genes, hormones, and cognitive function. She is currently a student counselor at the UTSA Sarabia Family Counseling Center.
